MONDAY, JULY 26, 2010

~ BREAKFAST:  8:00 – 9:00 AM ~ 

SESSION I:  9:00 – 10:15 AM

Class Option 1  
Rocking the Social Networks (Blogging, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Web 2.0)
Presenter: George Needham, OCLC
Description:If your idea of communication is posters and flyers, you're living in the Chuck Berry/Buddy Holly era. If you want to get into the Lady Gaga/Black-Eyed Peas era, you need to use the communications tools that your new users are adopting. This session will introduce you to many of these tools, and maybe provide a few laughs as well!  Other instructors may include fellow "It's All Good" bloggers, Eric Childress, Matt Goldner, Chrystie Hill, and Alice Sneary.

 Class Option 2
Graphic Novels 101: Everything You Need To Know About Graphic Novels
Presenter: Michael Bradshaw, Supreme Court of Ohio Law Library
Description:Mr. Bradshaw will discuss what a graphic novel is, and the history of comic books from their inception to what they’ve become today.  The class will also explore non-superhero graphic novels, including memoir, fiction, noir, coming-of-age, as well as writers & artists, and new additions to the genre.   

Class Option 3 
Rock the Room! – Networking Skills for Everyone
Presenter: Kristen Lindsay, Heidelberg University
Description: Use your networking skills to become the life of any professional party, whether you are connecting with colleagues at a conference, or building your professional network on campus. Learn easy tricks that help you remember names, navigate a reception, and start conversations. 

 
SESSION II:  10:30 – 11:45 AM  

Class 1
Wii Will… Wii Will… Rock You: Gaming in Libraries
Presenters: Elizabeth Jacobs, Beka Lindeman, Maria Vega; Piqua Public Library
Come learn about a variety of game types that can be used for successful library programs including computer games, board games and video games (like the Nintendo Wii).  We will demonstrate several gaming set-up options for libraries and present a variety of the best games available for participants to play.

Class 2
Life at the Library is a Beach (Bringing Fun into the Library on a Budget)
Presenters: Beth Anderson and Tanya Ellenburg-Kimmet; Wright State University
  Description: Increase staff morale. Engage patrons with little funding.  Find balance, so you can smile in stressful meetings.  Make it look like the library is booming without tanking the money reserves.

"What if the Library Rocks and Nobody Hears it?" Making Staff Good Ambassadors
Presenters: Susan Ungham and Patricia Rainey; Medina County District Library
Description: Does your community hear the library's song?  Is it loud and clear?  Learn how to empower your whole staff to be effective library ambassadors.  Explore what you need to know before initiating neighborhood connections, how to prepare for successful community contacts, and how to enhance the community's perception of the library.

Supervisor Idol
Presenter: Kristen Lindsay, Heidelberg University
Description: It’s not easy being in charge. And even when you’re not in charge, being a leader in your department requires many of the same strengths. This session will delve into the skills and behaviors that will help you become the best supervisor, or supervisee, you can be.  Even Simon Cowell would be proud! 

 Class 2 ~ The CHAIR'S CHOICE Class:
Basic Reference for Support Staff
Presenter: Jessica Page, Assistant Professor, Ohio State University
Description: As library budgets and staffs shrink, support staff are increasingly serving as the front line for reference questions.  Ms. Page will share tips and tools to help provide quick and accurate answers.

Going Green in the Library
Presenters: Terri Greer & Jeanie Radtkin, Cleveland State University
Description:  Learn how to help your library be more environmentally friendly.

Tech Snapshot: Musical Chairs with Technology
Presenters: Everyone!
Description: Show off your favorite technological toy, or come see someone else’s. It’s a show and tell Tech Petting Zoo. Even if you have nothing to show off, come see, listen and ask questions. Presenters, Attendees, and OLSSI staff are invited to mix and mingle with the latest technology, gadgets, and gizmos!

 
SESSION V: 4:15 – 4:45 PM

Rockin’ Out in Water Aerobics
Presenter: Tanya Ellenburg-Kimmet, Wright State University
Description: Learn how water can be your friend when working out. It’s high aerobic/low impact exercise which is scalable to your needs. This activity is great for people with hip, foot, and knee problems. And yet it’s not a wimpy workout for those who are workout-aholics. Ability to swim not necessary, ability to use the shallow end of the pool required. 

Option 3 
ZUMBA Dance Fitness!
Presenter: Mary Ayres, Southern State Community College
Description: Never heard of Zumba? Zumba is only the most popular Latin-inspired dance fitness class in the world. Zumba is a high-energy program with motivating music and dance moves drawn from salsa, merengue, and other Latin steps and free-style forms. It integrates some of the basic principles of aerobic, resistance and interval training to tone and sculpt your body, burn fat, maximize caloric output and benefit your heart and mind. Zumba is an exercise in disguise. So come on and join us for some fun!

Rock -N- Roll -N- Comics: A Roundtable Discussion
Presenters: Michael Bradshaw on mic, Ryan Kimmet on bass, Tanya Ellenburg-Kimmet on synthesizer, and Teresa & Jamie Colegrove on guitar - the Rockin’ Comic Book Band! 
(Actually, no band at all, but a Roundtable Discussion about music and graphic novels!)

 
Description: Did Rock and Roll change America?  The World?  Where have rock music and comics overlapped?  What are the Top 5 movie musicals of all time?  What do Johnny Cash, KISS, and My Chemical Romance all have in common?  These questions and many more will be discussed, debated, and answered!  
Q & A from the audience, too!

TUESDAY, JULY 27, 2010

SESSION I:  9:00 – 10:15 AM

Rare Books Rock (literally): Very Old Literature & the History of Paleontology
Presenter: James St. John,
Ohio State University–Newark, Geology & Ancient Historical Monographs
Description: Library users rarely use rare books, but their academic value extends beyond purely historical significance.  Literature from antiquity to the 1800s can be used in scientific studies of fossils.  Interpretation of fossil organisms is not & has not always been straightforward.  This program will present a case study of how rare books have been used to elucidate the nature of research on fossil trilobites.  Some rare paleontology books and trilobite fossils will be available for examination.


Class 2
Graphic Novels 201: The Top Ten Graphic Novels in depth
Presenter: Michael Bradshaw, Supreme Court of Ohio Law Library
Description: What your library needs, what you need to know!  An in-depth study of the Top 10 graphic novels of all time.  Ranging in subject matter from superheroes, to battles with cancer, to surviving the holocaust, Mr. Bradshaw will discuss what they’re about & why they’re the overall best.  

Class 3  
No Cell Phones Please, the Performance is Beginning – Not!  (Mobile Access)
Presenter: Brian Gray, Case Western Reserve University
Description: Libraries are dealing with a new generation of users and technologies. Enjoy an exploration and discussion on mobile tools and devices that are guaranteeing library users are not leaving before the band takes the stage. Will also include a discussion on e-readers, and a librarian's experience with the pilot project using the Kindle DX at Case Western Reserve University.

 

SESSION II:  10:30 – 11:45 AM

Borders & Boundaries – Maps, not Rap!
Presenter: John Crissinger, Ohio State University–Newark/COTC
Description: You were expecting punk rocks’ Less Than Jake at this raucous session? No way, dude! Mr. Crissinger, one of OLSSI’s most popular speakers, will explore wishful mapping of real borders and real mapping of wishful borders – you decide!

Sometimes You Rock, Sometimes You Roll!
Everything I Learned about Work, I Learned at the Library

Presenter: Gaynelle Predmore, Bowling Green State University
Description:Are you “rocking” in the world of libraries or just “rolling” along trying to make it through the next hour? Come explore the good, better & best practices that just might turn you into a “rock star” in your library, wherever you are, and at whatever you do!

 Class 3  
Make Sure You Have the Energy to Party Like a Rock Star (Energy and Sustainability)
Presenter: Brian Gray, Case Western Reserve University
Description: Renewable energy and sustainability is a hot topic for research, government funding, and even consumer awareness.  Explore print, web, and government resources to help support Ohio's push in advanced energy and the needs of library users.
